Xoff's Blog

Commentary on state politics by Bill Christofferson, who often uses Xofferson or Xoff to shorten his 14-letter last name.

Christofferson, a recovered journalist and ex-political reporter, has been a Democratic strategist and consultant for 20 years and is now retired. He lives in Milwaukee.
He is the author of a political biography, "The Man From Clear Lake: Earth Day Founder Sen. Gaylord Nelson," published by the University of Wisconsin Press.

A twofer: Wrong again

In recent days I have complained about two items concerning the Greater Wisconsin Committee.

One is the use of the word "shadowy" to describe a group that is in full compliance with state and federal laws and discloses everything it is required to disclose.

The other was a news story falsely claiming that I run GWC.

Now comes Brian Back, described as a Mequon author, with a column in the Journal Sentinel titled, "Rise of the Shadow Parties." Writes Back:

But the interest groups are run by former party operatives: Coalition for America's Families by Steve King, former state Republican Party chairman; Club for Growth by R.J. Johnson, former executive director of the Republican Party; Greater Milwaukee Committee by Bill Christofferson, former campaign chair for Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle; and WMC by its president James Haney, an ex-staffer in the administration of two Republican governors.

Which prompts yet another email from me to Back and the JS:

If only I did 25% of what I am blamed for...

Contrary to the assertion in your column, I do not run the Greater Wisconsin Committee and never have.

I was a consultant to GWC from 2004 until a year ago, when I retired. I now serve as a member of its board of directors. Michelle McGrorty has been the executive director of GWC for several years and runs the organization.

I didn't chair Jim Doyle's campaign; I was his campaign director in 2002 and have not worked for him for more than five years.

I would ask the Journal Sentinel to set the record straight.

It gets a little tiresome for a retired old codger to have to spend so much of his time on this. I don't know Mr. Back, who may well be an author, but is certainly not a fact checker.

Shadowy

I think they use the word shadowy because it is the nicest word they can find to describe the GWC. All the other words that fit are not polite to print.
