Xoff's Blog

Commentary on state politics by Bill Christofferson, who often uses Xofferson or Xoff to shorten his 14-letter last name.

Christofferson, a recovered journalist and ex-political reporter, has been a Democratic strategist and consultant for 20 years and is now retired. He lives in Milwaukee.
He is the author of a political biography, "The Man From Clear Lake: Earth Day Founder Sen. Gaylord Nelson," published by the University of Wisconsin Press.

All I know is what I read in the papers...

"WI papers split on presidential endorsements," the Associated Press tells us:

Two Wisconsin newspapers have split on their presidential endorsements Sunday.

The Janesville Gazette is endorsing Republican John McCain, while The Sheboygan Press is coming out for Democrat Barack Obama.

That's sort of true, as far as it goes. Here's what the AP didn't say. From WisPolitics, a breakdown of Wisconsin newspaper endorsements:

Barack Obama
- Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
- La Crosse Tribune
- Kenosha News
- Chippewa Herald
- Wisconsin State Journal
- The Capital Times
- Milwaukee Shepherd Express
- Stevens Point Journal
- Sheboygan Press
- Shawano Leader

John McCain
- Beloit Daily News
- Sun Prairie Star
- Green Bay Press-Gazette
- Janesville Gazette

Enough, already!

Now can we stop hearing the claim that by sending out 50 law enforcement agents to polling places Tuesday that Atty. Gen. J.B. Van Hollen is just doign what Peg Lautenschlager did four years ago?

Here's what Lautenschlager herself says:

In 2004 Peggy Lautenschlager, now an attorney for Lawton & Cates, said she also used DOJ personnel to monitor polling places on Election Day, but her efforts were focused on making sure voters got their chance to vote.

"It is clear that under the guise of stopping alleged voter fraud he is concerned about obtaining voter suppression," she said.

Van Hollen said earlier this week that he planned to send out his own team of agents and attorneys, saying voters, "have a right to vote in fair elections untainted by election fraud."

Lautenschlager said her efforts in 2004 were "diametrically opposite to what Van Hollen is proposing to do on Tuesday."

What is the problem?

This whole thing is insane. There is little or no voter fraud so there is nothing to monitor. They are wasting their time. But I don't understand how some guys standing around the poles is going to keep someone from voting. Can you name one person who hasn't voted becaues they were intimidated at the poles? If you could, you would have. Let them stand around the poles. So what? Here is an offer. If anyone in Green Bay calls and says they were intimidated at the poles and did not get to vote, call me. I will personally take them to vote. Bill has my contact information.

WHAT ABOUT THE ISSUES! Has anyone who writes in this blog spent 20 minutes on EACH of the candidates web sites? Has anyone looked up an issue like health care so they can make an informed decission?

Our AG is the top cop in the state. He thinks he is doing the right thing. He is wrong. But I would never let that fact be a factor in who I vote for. There are plenty of crazy politicians out there, Dems and Republicans alike. Man up. Get over it. Go vote.

Oshkosh Northwestern

The Oshkosh Northwestern refrained from endorsement saying it could not figure out how either candidate would govern. (I guess 21 months isn't long enough for them.)
