Beau and Joe
Beau Biden, Joe's son, is on stage to introduce him. He's told the very sad story of the car accident that destroyed half of the Biden family as he was about to take office, and his initial decision to stay at home and not accept. He was convinced to take office, but continued to come home every night to be with his kids. It's a powerful story of a family dealing with adversity, which seems to be a common theme of this convention. Certainly timely considering how many are facing adversity now.
Joe Biden has received a tumultuous reception, and he is speaking of his pride of his family, his son, and his mother.
He is speaking about the promise of America, and how it is in jeopardy.
(Two brief dramas - someone has collapsed in the crowd and some EMT's and security people are trying to help her. As is typical, there's a gaggle of reporters standing around filming it. It looks like she's okay, just kind of woozy. Also there is another of the "we didn't get any signs" issues going on. We didn't get any McSame signs.
Biden is speaking to the fact that McCain will continue all of the worst policies of the current administration - with a chant from the crowd of "that's not change".
I'm so glad that nobody is expecting me to handle signs. It's not very easy to get this many people to perform on cue, and I'm sure I'd get it wrong.
Biden is speaking very well to the points of whether it is more sensible to trust McCain's experience or Obama's judgment - "John McCain was wrong, and Barack Obama was right".
I'd heard earlier that Barack Obama had arrived, and indeed he has just walked out on the stage. Nice surprise. The whole Biden familyhas taken the stage - it's quite a crew, including Joe Biden's mother -
And we're done -
Normally I go back to the motel after the convention at night and fill in some of the holes with more pictures and video - that may not happen tonight, since when I left the hotel this morning my wireless was dead.
