Good grief! The campaign's finally here, but we deserve better
So the presidential campaign finally comes to Wisconsin, and this is what we get?
Good grief!
Does anybody really think that what this campaign really needs is one more debate, in Wisconsin?
The fact that Hillary Clinton wants to make that an issue tells you all you would ever need to know abouot (a) who's losing and (b) who is running out of money.
There have been 18 debates, and more are scheduled. Unfortunately(?), there has not been one in every state that has held a primary or caucus. But they've been on television, and even in Wisconsin most people have TV sets these days. Or they can go to the corner bar and try to persuade the bartender to switch from basketball to the debate.
There have been far more debates than I've cared to watch, in fact.
Does Hillary have an attack she wants to launch in person, one that just can't wait a week or so?
Does she think that Mike Gousha will make Obama look bad?
It's bad enough to talk about debates; that's a pretty sophomoric campaign tactic. What must be even more embarrassing for the Clintons, who have played politics at the highest level, is to be spending her precious TV money on a commercial that purports to be about debates.
It's not really about debates, of course. It's a comparative ad that uses campaign process -- the debate issue -- as cover for a negative on Obama's health care plan.
Why not just make the comparison? Does Clinton have a poll that says people in Wisconsin are so provincial that they would make up their minds based on whether a candidate wants to debate in the Badger state or not? I hope not.
Clinton claims she wins in states where there are debates. People in those states Obama won must not have had TV sets (similar to our situation in TV-less Wisconsin, apparently.)
Actually, what the primaries have told us is that Obama does very well when he has time to campaign in a state and voters get to see him. Clinton started out with huge leads almost everywhere, but has seen them erode. If Super Tuesday had come a week later, this race might already be over and Obama the certain nominee.
She may be able to hold onto the sizable leads she has in Texas and Ohio; we'll see. Obama's already agreed to debate her in those states, so that should pretty well cinch it for her, don't you think?
How silly is that?
After waiting this long for the candidates to get to Wisconsin, we deserve better.
