Xoff's Blog

Commentary on state politics by Bill Christofferson, who often uses Xofferson or Xoff to shorten his 14-letter last name.

Christofferson, a recovered journalist and ex-political reporter, has been a Democratic strategist and consultant for 20 years and is now retired. He lives in Milwaukee.
He is the author of a political biography, "The Man From Clear Lake: Earth Day Founder Sen. Gaylord Nelson," published by the University of Wisconsin Press.

Name the Senator

Which U.S. Senator from Wisconsin said:

"We must end that conflict. Iraqis have failed time and time again, we can no longer wait for reason or hope or clarity from the Bush administration. We need to bring our troops home now and only Democrats can lead the way."

It was Herb Kohl, at the state Democratic convention in Milwaukee this weekend.

Russ Feingold has been in the vanguard of the anti-war effort. Kohl was more cautious, but now is solidly in the ranks.

UPDATE: Here's what Feingold had to say, according to the AP:

"This Congress is Democratic because America wants this Iraq folly to end. We can hold Republicans responsible for much. But on Iraq, we have ourselves to blame in part."

Herb's comments

I had a chance to talk to Herb before his speech. I asked him to cosponsor the Habeas bill, as he had voted for it in the SJC. He just gave me the Herb smile and said 'thanks for the comment' before moving on to give this speech about "Democrats leading the way".
