Sand Mine Meeting Gets Testy

Some of you may have heard about the sand mine that Proppant is trying to build in Dunn County. Although, as always, some of the resistance to this is the normal NIMBY sort of complaining, there are also a lot of legitimate concerns being raised about spoiling the Hoffman Hills area (which is quite stunning and unusual, and brings in 1.5 million bucks a year in tourism) as well as unanswered questions about traffic caused by the mine.

And of course, nobody really wants to see the hills around their home flattened out so that oil rigs in Texas have a better supply of sand. There are even more questions raised by the fact that Proppant has apparently not even approached the DNR about permitting, etc. yet.

I'm not going to go into all the things that are wrong-headed about this - but things are getting fairly argumentative. Last night the Tainter Township planning board decided to postpone a decision on the mine because Proppant can't seem to get its act together to revise their proposal. This caused a minor bruhaha , during which the sheriff had to respond to remove one of the participants, followed by a demonstration of sorts against the proposed mine.

Does my heart good to see that people can be outspoken about something they oppose. But there's so much else to oppose.
