Sykes declares Milwaukee tax revolt over

Here is today's Sykes post, in its entirety:

THE MILWAUKEE TAX REVOLT

is over.

That's based on Tuesday's special county board election in the heart of Tax Revolt Central -- South Milwaukee, Cudahy, St. Francis and Oak Creek.

In that south suburban area, where huge rallies sponsored by Citizens for Responsible Government helped fuel the recall campaign against Tom Ament, voters said that enough is enough.

A hand-picked Scott Walker candidate, who pledged to do whatever Walker wanted, lost to a candidate who's criticized Walker budget cuts and favors a referendum on an added one cent county sales tax to pay for parks, transit and property tax relief.

Walker says he'll veto the resolution rather than even let the voters express themselves on it. Now we know why.

It's time for a serious candidate to step up and challenge Walker's reelection bid in April. His one-trick, no-tax pony act is getting very old and tired.

UPDATE: Progressive Majority has more:

Pat Jursik won with a whopping 54% of the vote. What is notable about her impressive numbers is that she won in what is considered a swing district of the Milwaukee County Board. The district includes parts of Cudahy, South Milwaukee, and St. Francis – not exactly the progressive areas of the county. Jursik campaigned on Walker’s culpability in the new pension scandal and on his dismantling of the Milwaukee County Parks system, and directly criticized Kujawa for being a likely rubber stamp on the board for Walker. She entered the race because the recent budget cuts were harming Sheridan Park, located across the street from her house. Apparently she isn’t the only one in the 8th District upset with Walker.

Chris Kujawa had the full weight of the Walker machine behind him: he was endorsed by Walker (not to mention also by State Sen. Jeff Plale, whose “finger in the wind” brand of politics failed him this time), and word is Walker even provided one of his campaign aides to help Kujawa. We hear that Walker himself was making phone calls on Kujawa’s behalf. All this and still a resounding loss for the Walker camp – ouch, that’s got to hurt.
