Road to perditionJeff Fitzgerald is only the latest example of the old maxim that one man's trash is another man's treasure. The measure in this case being legislative success.

Fitzgerald, Wisconsin Assembly Speaker and candidate for the GOP's US senate nomination, last month dissed Tammy Baldwin, the Democratic nominee for Senate. He said that over her seven terms as a member of Congress, she "only" sponsored 105 bills, with just three of those enacted into law.

Most public officeholders are pretty careful these days about separating their campaigns from their official offices. But the word hasn't trickled down yet to Assembly Speaker Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald, considering a US Senate run, has repeatedly used his taxpayer-paid spokesman, John Jagler (pictured), to comment on his potential candidacy.

A spokesman for Jeff Fitzgerald says the Assembly speaker hasn't formally entered the race despite a headline over a Wausau Daily Herald editorial that read: "Jeff Fitzgerald: I'm running for Senate."

 

"Nothing has really changed," said spokesman John Jagler. "They asked if he's running.

Sooner or later, when you inflate your bio, someone's gonna find out. It might be your employer, or the media, or even the voters. But that doesn't stop it from happening all the time.

Latest example: Dan Bice reports that Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald, of Fitzwalkerstan's Flying Fitzgerald Brothers, didn't actually get a basketball scholarship to UW-Green Bay, as he claims in his bio.

Who's responsible? Oh, that darned Staff Error again. Why would you hire somebody with a name like that, anyway?

Fitzgerald transferred after a year to UW-Oshkosh where he received a degree in ..... journalism. Thought it would be creative writing, didn't you?

Sumi said she could not set a date to take more testimony because the GOP legislators named as defendants in the case are still covered under legislative immunity.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, Senate President Mike Ellis, Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald and Assembly Majority Leader Scott Suder are entitled to their day in court, Sumi said, but it's hard to know when that will come.

"[The restraining order] remains in effect until further order of the court," Sumi said. She said the GOP lawmakerscould waive their immunity, allow their attorneys to move forward without them or wait until their immunity expires when the legislative session ends.

State Rep. Mark Pocan started it with a blog post saying he felt like he was living in Fitzwalkerstan:

Over the past month, Republican legislators have continuously violated our own legislative rules. They’ve even disobeyed state law and a court order.

     Don’t worry, they’re above the law.

     Don’t recognize your state? That’s because it’s not your state anymore. The Republicans have spent the past two months quietly trying to form their own junta aimed at dismembering Wisconsin.
