Women's Health and Safety Act

On Wednesday, February 27th, the Senate Health Committee heard testimony on SB 398, the Women's Health and Safety Act. The bill seeks to repeal Wisconsin statute 940.04 (Wisconsin's Criminal Abortion Ban), which, if Roe v. Wade is overturned, would outlaw nearly all forms of abortion in Wisconsin. Moreover, the law includes a penalty of up to 15 years in prison for doctors who perform an abortion and a woman could receive up to 3.5 years in prison for having an abortion or performing an abortion on herself. The law is currently unenforceable as the U.S. Supreme Court ruling Roe v. Wade legalized abortions in all fifty states 35 years ago. However, if Roe fell, Wisconsin's Criminal Abortion Ban would immediately go into effect; local district attorneys could prosecute both women and doctors involved in the now-illegal procedure.

Change to Comment System

I've made a small change to the system tonight. Now those of you who are in the contributors and editors roles (and if you can see this message, that means you) can now delete comments on blog entries that you have created. This might be handy if someone posts a comment on one of your articles that is particularly inflammatory. Don't go nuts, though.

Hi -

I'm going to be out of town starting this afternoon, and then pretty much till Oct. 15. I'll be checking my email, etc. at least every couple of days - but things will be a little slow in the contact department till after I get back, so don't expect real quick response to anything.

I'll be in Minneapolis at Nordic Roots Festival over the weekend, then leaving for Nova Scotia for a while. Then going immediately to a business show for 2 days, so it's gonna be nuts.

[Bloggers] New Feature to embed video

Hello All -

I've just put in a feature on Uppity Wisconsin to be able to more easily embed video on the site. When you post a blog entry now, you should see a number of entry spaces on the form called "remote video". I've only enabled this for a couple of video providers at the moment, including YouTube. Basically the way this works is that you either enter in the URL for the video in question, or the Embed code for the video in the box, and Whallah! (sorry, couldn't resist) you get the video embedded at the end of your blog entry. This has very minimal testing at the moment. I'm in the process of setting up a couple of different HOWTO videos but it's hard to get them finished with all the other stuff going on.

You can write about anything you want, though of course we'd like you to mostly stick with progressive politics. We're looking for more writers to write about Wisconsin topics, anywhere in the state.

About once a month, I get some e-mail chain letter that carries on about how great Americans and America was in the 1950, and how, in comparison, we're all crap now. Mostly, they're the whining of conservatives about how the world isn't the way they imagined it was when they were kids. I delight in replying and proving the lie to the e-mail, point by point.
