Vernon County CAFO Moratorium Defeated

Since Borges is out on vacation, I thought I'd bring up the fact that the 2400 head Vernon County CAFO operation that she blogged about recently is probably going in . The Vernon County Board has voted to not support a moratorium on CAFO operations. More details when we have some.

Update -

There's now an article in the Vernon County Broadcaster .  Although there will be no moratorium on large animal operations --

The board did, however, approve two measures to address farm growth and
land planning. On a pair of 15-14 votes, the board approved an animal
siting ordinance limiting animal units and approved a measure to begin
comprehensive planning.

The animal siting ordinance deals with
farms with more than 500 animal units. That ordinance only gives the
county oversight on the location of such an operation and is basically
a permitting system. The ordinance is very similar to state legislation
formulated for counties.

Hey thanks Steve

Yes there were losses in this mess, but the work continues. If anything, the studies will be going forward faster and with more determination. If the medical community was concerned about the health effects of these facilities, then a moratorium vote has not changed that. We will take up comprehensive planning and identify groundwater sensitive areas and develop a strategy to get zoning county-wide. The public dismay at the vote is huge, and so perhaps we will have some new faces on the board come April 2008. On a State-wide stage, this Local vs. State control will not go away. Vernon County was unable to beat DATCP back, but this is only round 2 or 3 in a long process. Watch Magnolia township to see if they appeal the DATCP review board's recent decision. Also watch the decision on the stricter siting ordinance that Calumet County submitted to DATCP. This wall will come down, just not sure when.
