Walker's Web Site Contracted to Out Of State Firm
This is going to in some way sound like a petty complaint, but bear with me. According to this story on WISN, Scott Walker's new campaign web site was developed by Ohio-based firm Midnet Media. Oddly enough, it appears it's actually hosted in New Jersey. So - this same Scott Walker who is complaining about the drain of jobs in the state doesn't want to hire a Wisconsin web developer or host to do his own web site -either because they couldn't find a Wisconsin company capable of doing it, or because Wisconsin companies are too expensive, depending on which spokesperson for the campaign you believe.
I admit, this is a personal gripe in some ways - I'm one of those too-expensive incompetent web developers in Wisconsin. His new site is nice enough - it's based on the Drupal content management system (just like Uppity Wisconsin, by the way). I'm a Drupal developer, and there are quite a few more of us in the state (and in fact, we're getting together in Madison for Drupal Camp Wisconsin next week), so I think there are in fact enough of us that Walker's campaign could have found someone in the state to do this work).
But I have to ask why it is that Wisconsin politicians aren't making more of an effort to keep their campaign dollars in the state. I've always thought it a little odd that almost all of my business comes from out of state, though I know this is partly because the economics of a rurally-based midwestern developer look really good to clients on the coasts where overhead is much higher.
But somehow Walker managed to find a developer based in Ohio and Illinois that just beat the pants off of everyone in Wisconsin?
Doesn't sound right to me, and I know that many of us in the state would have appreciated the work.
