Commentary on state politics by Bill Christofferson, who often uses Xofferson or Xoff to shorten his 14-letter last name.
Christofferson, a recovered journalist and ex-political reporter, has been a Democratic strategist and consultant for 20 years and is now retired. He lives in Milwaukee.
He is the author of a political biography, "The Man From Clear Lake: Earth Day Founder Sen. Gaylord Nelson," published by the University of Wisconsin Press.

Who's paying attention to any of this?
The front page of the Journal Sentinel this morning had an article with the important news announcement that Wisconsin is "America's Cheeryland."
Our state ranks second in Extraversion, fifth in Agreeableness, and a still-solid twenthieth in Conscientiousness.
OK, so we're a lowly forty-seventh in Openness, but that's only because we're so accomodating and friendly it's considered impolite to bring up potentially stressful Bad News, or Serious Questions.
That must be the Journal Sentinel's attitude, and it probably goes a long way toward explaining their head-in-the-sand editorial policy, especially regarding world affairs.
I've written a few of their reporters -- and even received e-mail replies -- but it's not like I'm holding my breath, expecting anything to change:
