Election Day

If you read this site, odds are I don't need to remind you of this - but I'm going to do it anyway.  Today is election day in Wisconsin.  Please go out and vote.

I'm tempted to paraphrase Vaugh Meader's The First Family and say "Vote for the Democrat of your choice- but vote".  But that would be crass.  So I won't do it.

Greg Palast Facing Homeland Security Charges - Update

The 9/11 ABC film flap

I wasn't going to say anything about the ABC 9/11 film (The Path to 9/11) that will be running next week. Normally I just can't get behind the idea that we should ask for censorship of anything before it's shown.

But ABC is clearly trying to be the new Fox News from the way it's behaving. They've happily sent screeners of the film to folks like Rush Limbaugh, and various right-wing bloggers. They're sending information about the changes they've made to the same folks (under the table). But they won't send a copy of the film to Bill Clinton, or Madeleine Albright.

If we had an Uppity Award....I would nominate FightingBob Fest!!

Down in Sauk County is a little known festival that attracts progressive voices from all over the United States. I attended the first FightingBob Fest 5 years ago. The place was alive with people of like minds discussing their efforts to stay involved with Wisconsin and the nation. The Fest schedule for this year includes speakers such as Jim Hightower and Amy Goodman. Every year the fest grows stronger.

Hey - Someone Noticed We're Here!

I belong to an organization called NetSquared, which primarily works with people using technology for social change. This afternoon I was looking at the blogs on their site and see this in a blog about Wisconsin.

Finally, Uppity Wisconsin, out of Menomonie, is a project started by Steve Hanson, "in an attempt to promote a discussion of progressive/liberal politics in Wisconsin." The site is based on the Drupal CMS.  It has blogs, Gabbly chat space and aggregates news from various sources.  Check out the case study of Uppity Wisconsin on the Netsquared site, here

Rummy and the Morons

Well, it would seem that I am a moron!

No, Really.. I never learned. I have to defer to the wise and well educated Donald Rumsfeld, who today let a hall full of American Legion Members know that if one a opposes the war in Iraq that they are suffering from “moral or intellectual confusion." Now, maybe I am a tad off base, but I think Rumsfeld just called me a moron!

Rummy also told the Legion members that "some seem not to have learned"... Well, I am always willing to look back on my beliefs and see if I am a bit skewed...I guess he is right, there are a few things that I never learned: I never learned that the only way to peace is by sending hundreds of thousands of troops to a foreign country and start killing their citizens. I never learned that it ok to lie to my fellow Americans in the name of National Security.

Nazis- 60/Protesters-800

Hey, Our team won!

800 to 60 is a great ratio and I think that we should cheer on those 800 folks that reminded the members of the National Socialist Movement that we kicked their brethren outta a few European places 60 years ago. This great battle was fought on the steps of the State Capitol on Saturday with around 300 Police and the State Patrol as referees, and between the 2pm and 4pm time frame reserved by the losers. The Nazis made 'you stink' gestures at the protestors were loud enough to drown out a majority of the speakers. And, as should be at the end of all great battles we should review the "tapes" and look at the errors; both sides made a few.

Welcome to Nowhere

Opening with an opening is the way to go for my first blog, I guess.

I have lived in the Chippewa Valley for over 10 years.I was raised in the Bay Area, also known as "The land of the Phantom Freeway." Yes! That's the one! In Santa Clara, California. It goes nowhere. It ends in the air, occasionally with a car sitting on the edge like an over told joke. On the 21st of this fine month another nowhere was opened, and most don't even realize it. Now, I have driven 53 on a bad day and I understand the frustration all of the drivers out there that could give a rat's tail about anything but getting home after working hard here in the valley, but this multi million dollar project overshadows our greater need.

Senator Allen, Racism, and Republican Politics (and MoveOn)

I'm sure you've all by now read about the flap with Senator Allen and his "Macaca" comment.

MoveOn is sponsoring a campaign to have the Republicans remove support from Allen and to denounce racism as a campaign tactic.

Subject: Sen. Allen has to go

Hi,

On Friday Republican Senator George Allen sunk to a new low. At a campaign stop the Virginia senator singled out the only non-white member of the audience--S.R. Sidarth, a young Indian-American volunteering for his opponent--and called him "macaque" (a racial slur meaning 'monkey'). He went on to say, "welcome to America." As it happens, Mr. Sidarth was born and raised in Virginia.

Can you join me in asking the Republican National Committee to take a stand against these tactics and withdraw support for Sen. Allen? (You can also watch video of the incident through the link below).

Thanks!

Uppity Wisconsin Taking a Well-Deserved Vacation

Things will be slow in Uppity-Land for the next couple weeks. Your editor is taking a vacation and will be in beautiful Nova Scotia and Vermont for a while. There might not be any new articles till about August 10. In the meantime, please submit calendar entries, or web links, or articles - I'll find a little time to edit while I'm gone.
